THE HOLY OF HOLIES

The Veil that hid “the glory” represented the veiled glory of God in the human body of Jesus. When Jesus was crucified, God the Father split the Veil from top to bottom. (See Matthew 27:51; Mark 15:38; Luke 23:45.) It was no longer needed because the once and for all perfect sacrifice was being made. Whereas, the blood of bulls and goats only covered sins, the blood of Jesus takes them away. No more sacrifices are needed.

The blood of Jesus opens the way for all to go right into the heavenly throne room of God and commune with Him through the Holy Spirit. (See Ephesians 2:13–18; Colossians 1:20–22; Hebrews 10:1–22.) So for the believer, the Holy of Holies represents the place of worship and intimacy.

Earlier we read about a Samaritan woman who met Jesus at Jacob’s well. Samaritans were part Jew and part Gentile. They worshiped God on Mount Gerizim which was north of Jerusalem. The Jews, including Jesus, worshiped God in Jerusalem. Jesus revealed some facts about the woman’s past that He would not have known without divine knowledge. This prompted the following conversation recorded in John 4:19–24.

The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Woman believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in Spirit and in truth (John 4:19–24 KJV).
